Budget demanded for climate change adaptation

The lawmakers in Karnali Province have demanded the government to bring a budget that addresses climate change adaptation and social inclusion.

At a meeting organized by the Social Development Committee of Province Assembly here Sunday, the Province Assembly members underscored the need for the budget on gender equality, disability and social inclusion.

Climate change, gender equality and disabled-friendly schemes are some areas to focus by the budget which is being brought for the fiscal year, 2079/80 on June 15.

Speaker of Karnali Province Assembly Raj Bahadur Shahi suggested that the budget addressed various dimension of inclusion to wipe out social discriminations. If we fail to embrace the climate change adaptation, we will see bigger crisis, he warned, adding that necessary policy and programmes were needed for it.

Deputy Speaker Pushpa Gharti (Bista) also said with the climate change impact, it is difficult to sort out issues. "Rivers and streams are getting dry in the rural area. Random use of dozer has pulverized sources of water and aboriginal seeds and plants getting vanished," she expressed worry.

Former Minister for Social Development and Province Assembly Member Dal Rawal viewed adequate budget was required for the environment conservation. Early warning system is equally necessary to minimize the human and physical loss, he added.

Similarly, Chairperson of Social Development Committee Devi Oli expressed happiness over public awareness and interest on gender inclusion and climate change.
