Experts and media persons have suggested that a language code of conduct should be brought for standardising language in media. The use of language in media should be according to the integrated concept as media is a means to empower or dis-empower language, as they viewed at an event organised here on Wednesday by the Language Commission.

For this cause, there should be coordination among the Press Council Nepal, the Commission, the Nepal Academy, the Tribhuvan University, the Nepali Central Department, the Department of Linguistics, the Curriculum Development Center and the Federation of Nepali Journalists, they stressed.

On the occasion, Press Council Chairperson Bal Krishna Basnet said a language code of conduct could be issued when need is in consultation with experts.

Stating that languages that originated in the country were gradually becoming weak, the Language Commission Chair Dr Lavdev Awasthi said Nepali media is expected to find causes and seek ways to resolve them.

The Academy member-secretary Prof Jagat Prasad Upadhyay expressed his readiness to collaborate for streamlining the language used in the media.

Prof Dr Jibendra Dev Giri stressed the need for media to play a role in linguistic simplification.

On the occasion, journalists Kedar Sharma and Kedar Nath Koirala presented working papers about the situation of the use of languages in media.
