GANDAKI: Chief Minister of Gandaki Province Surendra Raj Pandey has said the companies offering ride-sharing services would be legalized once new transport legislation comes into effect upon approval from the Council of Ministers.
CM Pandey reaffirmed his commitment regarding it in meeting convened by the Gandaki Provincial Policy and Planning Commission here today.
Pandey announced that the ride-sharing services will be formally recognized under the Vehicle and Transport Management Regulation-2080 BS.
The regulation is currently under review by the Council of Ministers. The regulation will bring ride-sharing services into legal framework, informed Pandey, citing the Supreme Court's ruling that the ride-sharing services could be run within the legal framework.
It may be noted that the province's Ministry for Transport had banned unauthorized ride-sharing services until the end of the last fiscal year 2023/24.
Also, the transport entrepreneurs have been criticizing the use of private vehicles for rental business as stipulated in the Vehicle and Transportation Act- 2049 BS.
Vehicles obtaining registration certificates for personal use will be permitted to render ride-sharing services after fulfilling the required process as per the proposed transport regulation.
At present, various ride-sharing services like Pathao, In-Drive, Sajilo, Taximandu are operating in Nepal. However, none of these have been legalized under the transportation law. These service providers companies, although, have been registered at the Company Registrar Office and Department of Industries.
