Collective efforts required to uplift vulnerable communities

General Secretary of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Jagannath Chapagain has pointed out the need for collective efforts for the advancement of vulnerable communities.

Making public the 'World Disaster Report 2022' published by IFRC here Monday, he said that the challenge of disasters can be addressed through the empowerment of the local communities. The first Nepali General Secretary of the Federation, Chapagain said humanitarian assistance programs are being continued to meet the needs of vulnerable people before, during, and after post-disasters and health-related emergencies. He mentioned that the Red Cross volunteers are always on the frontline in the event of a disaster including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report titled 'Trust, Equality and Local Action' highlights the global experience of dealing with the health crisis including that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, while pointing out that trust, equity, and local action are important aspects of disaster preparedness.

The head of the IFRC delegation in Nepal Azmat Ullah said that the IFRC has been working closely with the Nepal Red Cross Society to provide humanitarian services while promoting health, water sanitation, and hygiene.

Executive Director of Nepal Red Cross Society Umesh Dhakal, Executive Director of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority Anil Pokharel, and Additional Secretary of Ministry of Health and Population Dr. Sangita Mishra pointed out the need to work in a coordinated manner during disaster preparedness, in the event of a disaster and post-disaster.

Chapagain, who has been holding the highest post of IFRC Secretary General and Chief Executive Director since February 1, 2020, arrived in Nepal on Saturday on a four-day visit to Nepal.
