The Election Commission has indicated that it will not register the candidacy of men for the post of Vice President. The commission meeting held on Friday decided that since a man was elected to the post of president, only a candidate of a different gender or community can be the vice president.
After the meeting, the spokesperson of the Commission, Shaligram Sharma Paudyal, said in a statement, "Registering the nomination papers of the candidates for the post of Vice President, it has been decided to instruct the election officer to register candidates that are opposite of gender or community of the newly elected Honorable President."
Article 70 of the Constitution states that 'the election of the President and Vice President shall be done in such a way that different genders or communities are represented'.
In sub-section (5) of section 16 of the President and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 2074, it is stated that "when nominating a candidate for the post of Vice-President, a person of a different gender or community than the person elected to the post of President shall be nominated".
According to a commissioner, the clear intention of Friday's decision is that a man's candidacy for the post of the vice president cannot be registered. Also, since the newly elected president belongs to the Arya community, there is a decision to register the nomination of a different community (Dalit, tribal tribe, Madhesi, Tharu, or Muslim) for the vice president.
Registration of candidacy for the post of Vice President will be held on Saturday. The election will be held on March 17.
