Five years at the local level: progress in infrastructure development

The five-year term of local level people's representatives is coming to an end. The Election Commission has already announced the date of local elections.

  If the election is held on the announced date, the new people's representative will take the reins at the local level for five years from next May. As the five-year term draws to a close, most local levels have made significant strides in infrastructure development. Among them, Kawasoti Municipality has made progress in road upgrading, roundabout, administrative building, ward office building, garbage management center and construction of fence with wall to reduce the loss of wildlife.

Kawasoti Municipality Chief Chandra Kumari Pun informed that 64.05 km of roads have been tarred during her tenure. He said that about 128 kilometers of roads have been gravelled and upgraded and 10 kilometers of roads have been repaired in different parts of the city. He said, "We believe that the construction of road infrastructure will help in the development of every sector as the rural areas have easy access to markets and highways."

Similarly, the municipality has completed construction of 95.08 culverts in 67.8 km of paved canals and in different wards of the city. Chief Pun said that 1,900 street lights have been installed in different parts of the city and the work of electrification has been completed in various places including 800 electricity poles. He said that mosaic tiles have been installed on small roads in the city.

He said that this work has been done in various small ways even in the current year. The 10 km road of Kawasoti Ring Road has been blacktoped so far and the office buildings of wards 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 15 including the administrative building of the municipality have been completed. Similarly, the office buildings of wards 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 13 and 16 are targeted to be completed in the current fiscal year, said Pun.

Deputy Chief of the Municipality, Prem Shankar Mardania Tharu, said that the work of garbage management has been taken forward with the completion of construction of garbage management center for sustainable garbage management at the city level during his tenure. He said that work has been done in various wards in the 19-kilometer area to prevent the loss of wildlife in the intermediate zone. During his tenure, 88 houses have been completed and handed over for the housing management of the deprived community. Deputy Chief Mardania Tharu said that 17 houses will be constructed and handed over in the current fiscal year.

He said that the construction of the covered hall was completed during his tenure. Stating that work has been started by constructing a master plan to build a city level stadium in Bishnunagar Chaur area of ​​Ward No. 6, he informed that work has been done to upgrade the road and park by constructing a master plan of Pokhari Lake. Budget allocation has been made for the construction of state-of-the-art cold store in the town, construction of community seed bank in ward no. Gumbas have been constructed and upgraded in wards 3, 5, 8 and 12, said Deputy Chief Mardania Tharu.

According to him, the ward office of the former VDC building has been upgraded by the municipality. The building of the Adivasi Tharu Museum has been upgraded and a warehouse for blood bank and emergency storage has been constructed in collaboration with the Red Cross, said Deputy Chief Mardania Tharu. Upgradation of playgrounds within the urban area has been started under one ward one playground, trees have been planted on the right side of the main road in different wards under the green city construction campaign. The municipality has stated that the construction of overhead tank has been completed in Ward No. 3 in collaboration with the Drinking Water Office.

Similarly, deep boring is being operated in Ward No. 4, 12, 13 and 17 by extending drinking water tank and pipeline in Chilaha Drinking Water Project of Ward No. 4. In addition, pipeline expansion work has been done in Ward No. 15 to expand drinking water access, said Mardania Tharu.

Similarly, he said that the minimum needs have been identified and work has been done accordingly. "We have come up with simple schemes, which are designed to make life easier for the people," he said.
