Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, has said government was working actively to ensure good governance.

At a programme organized on 'Public trust on government: A discussion' by the Transparency International Nepal here Sunday, Minister Karki reiterated that government was committed to list Nepal as the country with the least corruption.

"Society can not be disciplined unless prize and punishment are taken together. All sectors concerned should extend support to make government transparent and accountable. It is civil society's responsibility to make local and provincial governments accountable," he underscored.

Reminding that the government conducted the local level elections in the stipulated date, Minister Karki vowed that country would have the federal and province level elections in time. Although economy has faced challenges, there is no crisis, he argued.

On the occasion, former Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Hariprabha Khadgi Shrestha said corruption was thriving in Nepal due to costly schooling of children and health care. So, the government itself must manage these two sectors well, she suggested.

Similarly, former Chief Secretary of government, Bimal Koirala, said public trust on government was eroding because the elected governments were heading to authoritarianism across the globe. Unequal exercise of law and power is another reason behind eroding public trust on government, he argued.

TI Nepal Chairperson Padmini Pradhananga and Vice Chairperson Buddhi Narayan Shrestha, among others warned that government was losing public trust. So, it is time to take timely measures to restore image, they suggested.
