As the biggest festival, Dashain has already started in Nepal, the celebration is on. However, there was a time when the sky was filled with colorful kites, now the situation is completely different.
Kite flying is one of the traditions of Nepali people in the festive season. It is said that when one flies kites, they are contacting and honoring their ancestors.
Anil Shrestha, the owner of Abhi store established in 2030BS, used to sell kites from the very beginning, later started to sell other goods as well.
He says, “Comparatively, as the years passed, the kites’ sale of kites has been decreasing. Now, children are more interested in mobile games, one of the main reasons why flying kites is not that popular at the present.”
“There are different kinds of kites. Those made out of paper and plastics are imported from India and others made of cloths (cloth kite) are imported from China,” Shrestha adds.
Another reason why kite flying is not as popular as before, Shrestha explains is the price range of the kites.
“It has become expensive because the government has increased the tax amounts and this also includes the kites. As far as I know, the same kite which cost 25paisa when I was young and now it costs more than Rs 5,” explains Shrestha.
