Journalism should not be done in the name of freedom: Chairman Oli

CPN-UML Chairperson and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that bad journalism should not be done in the name of freedom.

 Inaugurating the Ninth National Convention of Press Chautari Nepal in Pokhara today, he said that today's media sector should be for the prosperity, good governance and development of the nation. He said that there was a need to use the achievements made in the field of communication to work for democracy and nationalism.

Stating that the history of Nepali journalism and press sector is short, Chairman Oli clarified that the condition of independent press is still lagging behind. Stating that the constitution has made clear provision in the field of freedom and rights, he stressed on the need to move towards fulfilling the duties along with the rights and entitlements. Stressing on the need to use the latest technology, Chairman Oli said that it should be income oriented and not past oriented.

Emphasizing that journalism should be for the prosperity and development of the nation, he pointed out the need for Press Chautari to make itself more organized and united in the days to come. Stating that the politics of the country is divided between Janadeshi and Paramadeshi, Chairman Oli said that the opposition will be defeated through the upcoming election. He stressed on the need to do everything possible to achieve the goal of prosperous Nepal and happy Nepalis.

On the occasion, President Oli honored various people including former presidents of Press Chautari Nepal Gagan Bista and Rajendra Aryal, Vice President Shanti Gurung, writer and political analyst Jhalak Subedi and released a souvenir.

 Gandaki Chief Minister Krishnachandra Nepali Pokhrel pointed out the need for the journalism sector to write in favor of democracy. He said that the Nepali Congress has always been in favor of democracy and freedom of press.

 More than a thousand delegates and observers from all over the country are participating in the convention which will continue till tomorrow. The General Convention will elect a new leadership for the coming term.
