KATHMANDU: Today is Kaag Tihar, the first day of the five-day Tihar festival.

On this day, people honor crows by offering them food, as they are seen as the messengers of Yamaraj, the Hindu deity of death and justice.

It is thought that providing rice pudding to crows today will send a favorable message to Yamaraj.

A special worship ceremony is taking place at the Kageshwari Mahadev Temple in Kageshwari Manohara Municipality to commemorate the occasion.

In addition, unique rituals for crows are being performed at the Kageshwari Temple in Hanumandhoka.

The Tihar festival is based on the belief that Yamaraj punishes wrongdoers, while Dharmaraj protects the virtuous.

Yesterday (Tuesday), the festival of Dhanteras was also celebrated, where people buy jewelry and copper utensils to honor Goddess Laxmi.
