KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is preparing to manage the waste only after its segregation.

The waste from all 32 wards in the city will now be segregated. The decision of the KMC comes as the waste from 18 local levels in the valley transported to Bancharedanda Landfill Site without the segregation has increased both cost and pollution, the Environment Management Department of the KMC said.

Chief of Department Sarita Rai said the polluters will be made more responsible for this and added that the waste should be segregated at its source as per the laws too.

Currently, segregation of the waste is being done in wards no. 5, 10, 24, 25 and 26 and it will be started soon in other wards too.

The KMC has planned to manage 20 per cent of the waste in Bancharedanda Landfill Site and the remaining others to manage from the service providers.

Rai said, "Waste generated at a certain site would not be managed by piling up it in another site. The quantity of the waste should be reduced by its segregation in the source for right management."

So far, some private companies were involved in the waste management job but the KMC now would do this job through service providers.

The 18 local levels in the Kathmandu Valley now produce some 1,600 metric tonnes of waste every day.
