Lawmakers call for safe space for women, senior citizens, priority to sports sector

Lawmaker Arjun Narsingh KC has said the pace of national development will be impeded until and unless the people living under absolute poverty, the marginalised and neglected citizens have their access to social security and income.

Taking part in deliberations on the Appropriation Bill, 2023 under the headings concerning the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the lawmaker drew the government's attention towards rising incidences of exploitation and violence against women.

He demanded the government ensure the effective implementation of laws aiming to control the violence against women."A new awakening is needed to change the society and make it safe for women," he said.

Hitaraj Pandey insisted on preparing a schedule for the implementation of budget and ensuring an audit of the implementation to check out whether it yielded results.

As he commented, the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2023-24 failed to assimilate the spirit of federalism and just emphasized the center.

"The pace of nation's development is unachievable without the empowerment of women," he said, advising the line ministry to be more effortful for overall development of women.

Rhishikesh Pokhrel pressed for more priority to training and infrastructure development in sports and the ranking of athletes to boost up their morale.

He highlighted the need of an integrated law regarding forest as scattered laws had caused issues.

Dr Toshima Karki was of the view of creating an atmosphere so that players could pursue their career within the country. She insisted on priority to construct more physical infrastructure in sports industry, free and quality treatment for injured players and health insurance to entire players.

Roshan Karki demanded provisions supporting safe environment for women and senior citizens at home and proper remunerations and pensions for players.
