CPN (UML) chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed the need for each country to respect legitimate interests of others while promoting their national interests.

Stating that mutual interests and respect should be reciprocally maintained, he said it would be injustice to merely advance national interest of a country ignoring mutual benefits and recognition of others. A policy of negation could not produce positive results, he said at an event with the theme of ‘Current international situation and CPN (UML)’s view on Nepal's foreign policy' organised here on Saturday by the party's Department of Foreign Affairs.

“Every country has its own foreign policy. Foreign policy determines the status and standards of a country. Taking all these aspects into accounts, the foreign policy of our country should be determined based on various backgrounds,” he said.

Nepal is independent in making a viewpoint on domestic and foreign relations and presenting a policy, he said.

India is insisting on not accepting the Mahakali River in Limpiyadhura of Darchula district as the border, he said. “The Mahakali River flowing through Limpiyadhura should be accepted as the border between Nepal and India. But India is not accepting a small stream flowing through Lipulek as the border. It is India’s claim to call the origin of the Mahakali River by digging a canal. We should not abandon our claim.”

On the Eminent Persons’ Group (EPG) report, he said he had to leave the government while he was preparing to receive the report. “There was no way of not receiving the EPG report. Later I had to quit the government midway.”

According to an agreement, Indian Prime Minister was scheduled to receive the report at first. But the report has yet to be published as Indian Prime Minister did not give time for it, he accused.
