More than 1 lakh sheep, goats were vaccinated against PPR

One lakh 37 thousand sheep and goats of the district have been vaccinated against PPR disease. According to Dr. Prabhat Neupane of Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Center Bharatpur, the sheep and goats in all seven municipalities in the district are about to be vaccinated. The vaccination campaign, which started on Monday, will continue for a week.

He said that this vaccine was given to solve respiratory problems in goats. The center has been providing free vaccinations. PPR is an epidemic disease caused by a virus in sheep and goats.

After its first appearance in the fiscal year 2050/51 in Nepal, the effect of this disease had to suffer huge losses. He informed me that the vaccination service has been running since the year 2058/54 to reduce the possible damage caused by this disease.

It is transmitted by coming into direct contact with infected sheep and goats, or through infected pus, grass clippings, whips, and caretakers. Neupane said that in goats or sheep infected with this disease, symptoms such as fever, drooling, dry mouth, not eating grass, and stopping to urinate appear.

According to him, there are symptoms such as itchy eyes, thick snot from the nose, sores on the gums and inside the mouth, and many diseases in the herd at once.

To avoid the disease, he suggested that the sheep and goats brought in by the farmers should be kept in isolation for at least 10 days without mixing with the animals in the house, and only if no symptoms of the disease are seen during that period, they should be mixed with the herd, and the diseased animals should not be transported from one place to another.

He also suggested that the person taking care of sick sheep should only wash hands and feet and change clothes, shoes, and slippers when taking care of other healthy sheep, PPR vaccination should be mandatory for sheep and goats every three/three years, and biological safety should be strictly followed.

 He informed me that the sheep and goats who missed the vaccination campaign will be vaccinated even after the campaign.
