Nepal accords special importance to Russia

National Assembly Chairperson Ganesh Prasad Timilsina said that Nepal had been giving special importance to relation with Russia.

Addressing the students at the Russian International Affairs Council in Russia today, Chairperson Timilsina reiterated, "We give special important to Nepal-Russia relation. Nepal, as a developing nation, has a huge opportunity to strengthen its tie with Russia."

Timilsina is currently in Russia on an official visit leading an eight-member delegation.

In his address, Timilsina cited China and Russia are increasing its trade volume recently and expressed his hope that both parties would mull measures to increase trade between Russia and Nepal as well as to increase the number of Russian tourists to Nepal.

On the occasion, he extended his gratitude to the Russian Federation for extending its support to hospital, road, hydropower project and setting up industries in Nepal since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Stating that the Buddhist faith had deeply influence various sectors in Russia for over nearly a decade, he also mentioned Russian scholar Ivan Minayev who came to Kathmandu in 1875 to study Buddhist practice, the first instance of people-to-people relations between the two countries.

Furthermore, he recalled Purna Bahadur MA, Laxmi Prasad Devkota and Bal Krishna Sam's visit to Russia in 1953 and shared that Nepal and Russia established diplomatic relations three years after their visit.

He expressed that he was extremely happy to know that the Council, a think tank representing the Russian community of foreign policy experts, was world renowned for professional education activities.

He also extended his best wishes to all the students, scholars, faculty members and researchers for their exemplary work.
