KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation, which has been protesting in the capital for the past five days, has declared an indefinite academic strike.
In a statement issued on Sunday morning, the federation announced that the strike will begin nationwide tomorrow (Monday).
Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa urged teachers and education staff across the country to support the strike by ceasing all activities, including the publication of results.
The federation, which has been protesting to demand various reforms from the government, has concentrated its protests in Kathmandu since last week.
The purpose of the strike is to pressure the government into enacting a school education system of high quality and a school education act that benefits both students and teachers.
“We call on all teachers and staff to close schools across the country and join the educational movement in Kathmandu,” the statement said. “During this period, we ask all educational stakeholders, including students, parents, school management committees, and others, to refrain from activities such as grading answer sheets, publishing results, conducting training seminars, and organizing educational tours, and to show their support for this movement.”
