The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the government to ensure arrangements for the treatment of all types of critical patients during this difficult situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NHRC asked the government to take effective steps for arranging additional beds with oxygen therapy in hospitals, to increase the supply of oxygen as well as making immediate arrangements for second phase of vaccination against Covid-19.

Issuing a press statement by NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel on Friday, the rights body drew the government’s serious attention for availing ventilators, ICU beds, medical supplies as well as smooth supply of foods and essential services.

It also requested the government to bring the necessary programme to keep high-morale of front liners including the health workers and security personnel and pay attention to the livelihood of workers with low income and daily wagers.

The people have been deprived of treatment in the current situation created from the second wave of Covid-19 and many people have lost their lives for lack of beds and oxygen in hospitals in the recent period, read the statement.

“It is learnt that the people have been compelled to lose their lives for lack of oxygen after the government did not take meaningful initiative to increase the supply of oxygen even after a year of the pandemic. There is a lack of medical supplies including remdisivir and patients have been compelled to buy medical supplies in high price,” according to the NHRC.

A team led by NHRC member Lili Thapa had already drawn attention of Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinator of Covid-19 Crisis Management Centre Ishwar Pokhrel in this regard.
