Parliamentary committee directs govt to make NHRC resourceful

The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) has directed the government to enrich the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with resources so that it would perform effectively.

A meeting of the Committee on Friday issued this directive to the government, according to Committee President Bimala Subedi.

In the meeting, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dhanraj Gurung, pledged cooperation to revise the National Human Rights Commission Act-2068 BS.

NHRC Chairman Top Bahadur Magar said the Commission was effortful to make the three-tier government responsible against caste-based discriminations.

Commission member Lily Thapa stressed that the Committee should make a significant intervention in gender policies so as to further promote the rights of gender and sexual minorities.

Commission Acting Secretary Murari Prasad Kharel said the environmental justice and digital rights and their promotion are also the human rights concerns of late.

In the meeting, lawmaker Santosh Pariyar of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party accused the NHRC of trying to sweep its shortcomings under the rug. He said it was saddening that the Commission failed to prioritize serious issues of justice such as the Nirmala Pant case.

 Another lawmaker of the party Sobita Gautam alleged the Commission for 'falsely' reporting to secure the GANHRI 'A' status while Jeevan Pariyar of Nepali Congress also said the rights of the Dalit community were not in NHRC's priority.
