KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has admitted that his coalition government with the Nepali Congress, which was formed in July, has not delivered the expected results in its initial 100 days.
During a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at Singha Durbar, Oli recognized the delays but attributed them to significant challenges, particularly natural disasters that have impeded progress.
He mentioned that the government's efforts were slowed down by such events, specifically referring to the severe floods that affected multiple districts, including the Kathmandu Valley, in late September.
These floods resulted in over 200 fatalities and extensive damage, and the government faced public criticism for its slow response.
Oli, who was in the United States at the time of the floods, acknowledged the inadequacies in relief and rescue operations, vowing to enhance efficiency in the coming months.
Despite these obstacles, PM Oli pointed out several key achievements made by the coalition government in its early days.
A notable accomplishment was addressing payment issues for distressed farmers. “For a long time, over 3 million farmers in 35 districts were unable to receive payment for their milk. In the last 100 days, nearly 1.5 million dairy farmers have been compensated, with the government releasing Rs 600 million for their dues,” he stated.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government has finally provided long-awaited subsidies to around 75,000 sugarcane farmers who had not received payments for their crops in years.
Regarding corruption, Oli reaffirmed the government's dedication to transparency and the rule of law, stating, “In controlling corruption, the government views the law as our guide, not the camera,” emphasizing a commitment to legal accountability over mere appearances.
