KATHMANDU: A clash has broken out at Gantantrik Chowk in Damak Municipality-5, Jhapa. The clash took place between a group protesting against the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area of Taplejung and the police.
The Sangharsh Committee had called for a strike in nine eastern districts including Jhapa on Sunday and Monday in protest against the cable car under construction in the Pathibhara area of Taplejung.
The leaders and activists tried to block the road by burning tires, but when the police tried to take them under control, they pelted stones, prompting officers to fire tear gas.
Some vehicles were damaged when the protesters threw stones. The Area Police Office, Damak, has arrested some protesters. The police fired three tear gas shells to control the situation during the clash. Three people who were blocking the road in Jhapa have been taken into custody.
The locals are protesting demanding the cancellation of the decision to build a cable car. More than 24 people were injured in a clash between the Mukkumlung Conservation Struggle Committee and the police on Magh 2, which was protesting against the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area. Three protesters were seriously injured in the clash.
