A tree plantation drive has taken place in Jhapa district on the occasion of World Elephant Day that falls on August 12 this year.
As part of the campaign, tree saplings of various species have been planted along the banks of the Mechi river at Bahundangi in Mechinagar Municipality-4 in the district. Various local organisations, hotel entrepreneurs, and locals participated in it.
Bahundangi is the area where more than 50 people have been killed in wild elephant attacks, said Shankar Luitel, who advocates for the protection of elephants. So the tree plantation is in memory of those who have been killed in wild elephant attacks, he said.
On the occasion, people were informed about the role of biodiversity and ways to be safe from wild elephant attacks, he said.
