KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli praised the bravery of peacekeepers worldwide, especially those currently serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Ministry of Defense and the Nepali Army to celebrate UN Day 2024, he highlighted their unwavering commitment and courage in tackling complex challenges, which exemplifies the true spirit of peacekeeping and inspires the global community to uphold peace and security.
Oli emphasized that UN Day serves as a reminder of the importance of the UN Charter’s ideals. He noted Nepal’s long history of advocating for peace, equality, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, showcasing the nation’s contributions to UN peacekeeping, international treaties, and disarmament efforts.
He expressed pride in Nepal’s peacekeepers, whose efforts have made a significant impact in conflict-affected regions worldwide.
During his address, the Prime Minister outlined Nepal’s foreign policy principles, including peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, and non-interference, underscoring the country’s stance of being “Friend to all and Enmity to none.”
He reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to multilateralism, stressing that global issues such as climate change, poverty, and security require collective solutions.
Oli called for strengthened partnerships to enhance the UN’s capacity to address challenges in difficult environments.
He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of UN country teams, field missions, and specialized agencies in promoting development and humanitarian support.
While reiterating Nepal’s readiness to contribute skilled peacekeepers, he acknowledged the growing risks peace operations face from violent groups and complex conflicts, highlighting the need for robust international support.
He emphasized the importance of equipping peacekeepers with necessary tools for safety and underscored the vital role of women’s participation in peacekeeping as a means of empowering women in conflict-affected societies.
The Prime Minister also noted Nepal’s endorsement of the “Declaration of Shared Commitments” and the “Action for Peacekeeping” initiatives, reflecting its commitment to global security responsibilities.
Oli used the occasion to address pressing global environmental challenges, highlighting how countries like Nepal, despite low carbon emissions, suffer disproportionately from climate impacts like glacier melting and natural disasters.
He cited the recent monsoon disaster in Nepal as evidence of these escalating challenges, which are not confined by borders, referencing Hurricane Milton’s impact in Florida.
Reiterating Nepal’s commitment to collaborating on climate resilience and sustainability, he expressed confidence in the UN’s leadership in addressing climate change, crucial for vulnerable nations like Nepal.
