In the local level election, there are only nine parties vying for the top post in more than 100 municipalities. Other parties have fielded candidates for less than 100 local level posts.
According to the Election Commission, the CPN-UML has fielded 736 local level chiefs while the Nepali Congress has fielded 646 local level chiefs. According to them, UML has fielded candidates for major posts in 90 more municipalities than Congress. UML has not fielded candidates for only 17 municipal chiefs while Congress has not fielded candidates for 107 municipal chiefs.
Nepali Congress has formed an alliance with CPN-Maoist Center, CPN-Unified Socialist Party, Janata Samajwadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha in the local level election.
According to the Election Commission, the main candidates in more than 100 municipalities are CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, CPN-US, Samajwadi Party, Janata Samajwadi Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Mongol National Organization and Janmat Party.
Out of 79 parties registered with the Election Commission, 64 parties have fielded candidates for the post of local level chief. Ten parties have fielded candidates for the post of head of only one municipality while the number of parties fielding candidates for the post of head of only two municipalities is seven.
