KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has spoken out two weeks after the violent protest that occurred in Tinkune, Kathmandu. In a video message released on the eve of the Nepali New Year, he addressed the incident, emphasizing the importance of peaceful expression in a democracy.
“It is a beautiful feature of democracy that different political groups, communities, and individuals can express their views freely,” said Shah. “However, while presenting such views and beliefs, everyone must exercise restraint. The violence, arson, and vandalism that occurred during the recent public demonstration caused human and material loss, which is deeply saddening.”
Shah also noted the increasing public awareness among citizens as a positive development. “There is no greater system or ideology than civil liberty. True democracy exists where there is a tradition and culture of listening to the people’s grievances—good or bad. The rising awareness among the Nepali people about the nation and its future is something we see as positive,” he added.
In the same message, Shah expressed his belief that the upcoming year can become a historic and golden chapter in Nepal’s history. He emphasized that the focus should be on unity and collaboration to solve the nation’s issues.
“The world has advanced significantly, but we are still trapped in cycles of various ideologies,” Shah said. “Our thoughts and actions should be centered around Mother Nepal. Every problem can be resolved through dialogue, consensus, coordination, and cooperation. The coming year must become a memorable and golden recollection in Nepali history—and we believe it can be,” he added.
A protest was held in Tinkune on the 15th of Chaitra (March 28) led by ‘Joint People’s Movement Committee’ commander Durga Prasai, calling for the restoration of the monarchy. The protest turned violent, leading to the deaths of two individuals and leaving several others injured.
