Nepali Congress leader Dr Sekhar Koirala has said the US-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact is purely a development project. It is time to persuade Nepalis that the MCC compact is in favour of Nepal, he added.

Leader Koirala said it during a programme organized by NC Biratnagar Metropolitan City Ward No 9 on the occasion of Democracy Day. Democracy needs to be bolstered to augment development works and alleviate poverty, he said, adding that there was no mention at all in the MCC compact that foreign military would arrive in Nepal once MCC is endorsed. He further said the expansion of electricity transmission line and roadway development are major works under the MCC project of Rs 63 billion. He however said he was not for accepting anything in the name of receiving the grant.

Other speakers at the programme including Anuja Koirala, Dipak Chapagain, Madhubabu Tiwari, Niranjan Rijal and Narayan Prasad Shrestha paid tribute to those who sacrificed lives for the achievement of democracy.
