Nepal Telecommunications Authority has started providing all its services through its online system from today to minimise coronavirus infection.

The government has made it mandatory for people to register the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of their mobile phones from July 16. Mobile phones whose IMEI number has not been registered will stop functioning from July 16 onwards.

The IMEI number of phones that have been imported by authorised mobile phone dealers will be registered by the respective dealers themselves. Meanwhile, people who have brought phones to Nepal personally can register the IMEI number of their phones personally.

Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has said that phones that have been in use prior to July 16 will not face problems. However, it has advised people who have been such phones to register the IMEI number of their sets. It has mentioned that from the aforementioned date mobile phones whose IMEI number has not been registered will not function in Nepal.

Every mobile phone has an IMEI number which is a unique number. Mobile phones which have a slot for one SIM card have one IMEI number and phones which have slots for two SIM cards have two different IMEI numbers. If people find it difficult to know about their IMEI number they can dial *#06# after which the IMEI number will display on their phone.
