Scott McTomine scored in the eighth minute to give United the lead.
United took a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute after Burnley scored an own-goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 35th minute to give United a comfortable lead.
In the 38th minute, Aaron Lennon scored a goal for Burnley. With no goals from either side in the second half, United won the match.
United has risen to the sixth position with 31 points from 18 games. West Ham has 31 points too, but it is ahead of Utd in goal difference. United have played one less game than West Ham.
Burnley is in danger of facing relegation if there is no improvement. They are at the 18th position of the table with just 11 points from 16 games.
