Indian coach Monty Desai has been appointed as the head coach of the national cricket team. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has cleared the way to appoint Monti after completing a process that lasted for about a month.

National Sports Council Chief Chandra Badna Rai informed that the letter approved by the Ministry has been sent to CAN. Even though the official appointment is yet to be made, Desai has been providing formal training to the Nepal cricket team since last Sunday. Nepal is playing a triangular series against Namibia and Scotland at Trivi Maidan Kirtipur as part of ICC Cricket World Cup League 2.

Nepal, which is second from last among the 7 teams in League 2, has to win most of the matches in the series to make it to the upcoming one-day World Cup qualifiers and to maintain the one-day recognition.

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) player selection committee called for applications for the head coach of the national team and out of 24 people who applied within a week, 5 shortlisted people were interviewed on 4th January.

Among those who applied, Indian coach Monty Desai, former Nepal coach Australian Dave Whatmore, Sri Lankan great bowler Dhammika Prasad, outgoing head coach of Bangladesh cricket team South African Russell Craig Domingo and former head coach of New Zealand T-20 team Glen Poknall were interviewed.

After CAN's coach selection committee recommended Desai's name, the performance committee decided and sent Rakhep for approval.
