Chitwan: More than a National Park

Natural god-gifted beauty comprising fauna and flora, offering little room for man-made monuments

When you talk about Chitwan or ask people about Chitwan the first thing that comes in one's mind is the Chitwan National Park. Establishing itself as a paradise for nature and animal lovers, Chitwan is so much more than just parks and animals. Chitwan is all about its natural god-gifted beauty comprising fauna and flora, offering little room for man-made monuments.

Chitwan is the one of the most visited districts in Nepal and lies at the southwestern corner of Bagmati Province in the Terai region. It is located 150 kilometers west of Kathmandu valley and ranked as the third most visited tourist destination in Nepal after Kathmandu and Pokhara. It is also home to the largest city in Nepal after Kathmandu.


‘Bis Hajare’ Lake 20

Situated between the Mahabharata Mountain Range (Lower Himalayan Range) to the north and the Siwalik Range to the south is the lake 20 Thousand, locally popular as Bishazari Tal or Beeshazar Tal. It is an extensive oxbow lake system in the buffer zone of the Chitwan National Park, a protected area in the Inner Terai of Bagmati Province. Just a distance of 158.7 kilometers from the capital and 10 kilometers from the headquarters of Chitwan, Bharatpur.


Kasara Durbar

Built during the reign of the Rana Regime, Kasara Durbar is an important fort that can be seen inside the Chitwan National Park. The 300 years old Nepali fort is now being used extensively as the office of the National Park. It was built by Shatrubhanjan Shah, son of Prince Bahadur Shah and can be seen at Upardang Gadi near Chitwan, called Uparadangari Fort.

Valmiki Ashram

It is a Hindu Valmiki temple situated in the Chitwan district of Nepal, inside Chitwan National Park. Many deities are worshiped here including Rama, Sita, and Valmiki. According to Hindu mythology, it is the place where Rishi Valmiki lived and wrote the Hindu epic Ramayana. It is believed that Sita, consort of Lord Rama, came here to stay during her pregnancy and it was the place where Lava and Kusha were born. Rama Navami is one of the main festivals celebrated here


Siraichuli Hill

The highest hill in the Chitwan district is located in the Kaule Village Development Committee of Bagmati Province. It is a great spot for individuals who love witnessing scenic sunrises and sunsets. Standing tall at an elevation of 1945 meters (6381.234 ft) is a great spot for picnics and hiking. On a clear day, one can see views of mountains such as Gausankhar, Dhaulagiri, Langtang, Rolwaling, and Manaslu and the Terai belt of the southern region of Nepal.


Jalbire Waterfall

Jalbire Waterfall, popular among locals as ‘Lamo Jharna’, is located 31.6 kilometers away from the headquarters of Chitwan. This 60 meters (196.85 ft) waterfall is one of the longest waterfalls in Nepal, being popular as the best and most beautiful tourist place. Local and other visitors come here to enjoy a hot day to swim and bathe in this cool and forceful waterfall which seems to be like the water from heaven when the water strikes the rocks directly at the bottom. This beautiful waterfall is not less than heaven where everybody can lose themselves with panoramic views of mountains, green hills, and stones where fall strike make the fall more beautiful.

Devghat

Devghat is one of the famous religious and cultural centers in central Nepal. Located at the junction of the Seti Gandaki and Krishna Gandaki rivers, it is one of the holiest places in Hindu mythology. There are various temples and caves where mostly Hindu people come for meditation and worship of God. Lying 6 kilometers away from Bharatpur, the area boasts many natural features due to its geography and climate including tropical forests, wild animals, and birds.
