Kanga Ajima, also commonly known as Kankeswari Maai is one of the major goddesses among the main 8 mother goddesses of Kathmandu. Then king Gunkamdeva, established this shrine as Astamatrika while he established ancient Kathmandu in the shape of " Khadga". Kanga Ajima is considered to be the youngest daughter of Vatsala Maaju and she is said to be the most naughty and loves to travel a lot. The festival of Kanga Ajima is celebrated during "Pahacharey" where she actually goes to meet her other sisters. The other palanquin of Lumari Ajima is also brought during the festival time and the three sisters meet at Tinikhyo and Ason, once a year.
The term "Ajima" is used by the natives of Kathmandu valley which means the grandmother goddess. In another way, it means the highly respected Mother Goddess. As Paachahre is started from today Kanga Ajima is bathed and worshipped in the early morning.
