South Africa reported its discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus on November 24.
Since then, it has been discovered in over 20 countries so far, and more countries are being added to the list each day. Several countries have put travel restrictions on African nations, amid criticism from WHO and the South African government.
Following is a list detailing every country that has confirmed the discovery of the omicron variant so far:
Australia: 6 cases (2 of 14 arrivals from S.Africa on 28 Nov)
Austria: 1 case (First case found on Nov 29)
Belgium: 1 case (First case in Europe in an unvaccinated person)
Botswana: 19+ cases (One of the first countries besides S.Africa to report)
Brazil: 2 cases (First case discovered in a traveler from South Africa on Nov 30)
Canada: 3 cases (2 travelers from Nigeria before Nov 29)
Czech Republic: 1 case (Found in a female hospitalized patient)
Denmark: 2 cases (2 travelers entering Denmark on Nov 23 from South Africa)
France: 1 case (suspected 8 more cases in those from S.Africa)
Germany: 4 cases (Passenger from S.Africa in Frankfurt, Nov 27)
Hong Kong: 3 cases (HK claims to have successfully contained the 3 cases before 30 Nov)
Israel: 3+ cases (2 doctors were also found infected on 1 Dec)
Italy: 4 cases (Man who returned to Milan from Mozambique before Nov 29)
Japan: 1 case (Namibian diplomat in his 30s from Namibia on Nov 30)
Namibia: 1+ cases (Japanese traveler got infected here so it is assumed to be infected)
Netherlands: 14 cases (13 Flight passengers from South Africa on Nov 29)
Nigeria: 1+ cases (South Korean travelers got infected here so it is assumed to be infected)
Portugal: 13 cases (13 football players of a single club)
Saudi Arabia: 1 case (1 person from ‘Northern African’ country on Dec 1)
South Africa: 77+ cases (Where it began)
South Korea: 2 cases (Discovered in a couple who were traveling inside Nigeria)
Spain: 2 cases (Man traveling from S.Africa on 29 Nov, 2 more are suspected)
Sweden: 3+ cases (First case in man from S.Africa, 29 Nov)
United Kingdom: 14 cases (First 2 cases were in Chelmsford and in Nottingham)
Dr. Anthony Fauci, USA’s top infectious diseases expert said yesterday, 226 omicron cases had been confirmed in 20 countries, adding, “I think you’re going to expect to see those numbers change rapidly.”
