One person is killed every three days in a road accident in Jhapa. This has been confirmed by the statistics of road accidents of the District Traffic Police Office up to mid-January of the current Fiscal Year 2078/79 BS.
A total of 63 people have been killed in road accidents till mid-January this year, said Police Inspector Nishesh Chapagain. There were 313 road accidents in the district till mid-January this year. That number is about 40 percent higher than last year. A total of 937 people were killed in 657 road accidents last year.
According to Chapagain, the number of two-wheelers violating traffic rules is high. "The number of deaths due to accidents in the district is increasing every year," he said. He said that the number of accidents is increasing due to increasing pressure of vehicles, the distance of roads, speeding, and disregard of traffic rules. According to Inspector Chapagain, the number of accidents has increased due to thick fog during winter, alcohol consumption, and lack of coordination between lights in the evening.
The Traffic Office has taken action against 23,200 drivers of vehicles violating traffic rules during the first six months of the current fiscal year. According to the office, Rs. 15.62 million has been collected from them.
