KATHMANDU: A study by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that people living with HIV/AIDS have been deprived of different opportunities for lack of birth registration and citizenship.
Releasing a study report on status of human rights of HIV/AIDS infected people, the NHRC said the infected ones and their families were facing such issues adding that the spouses and children of those dead from HIV/AIDS have faced difficulties in getting birth registration and citizenship. Those infected ones and their families are struggling to do business, get job, access health care insurance and procure immovable property.
The report stated that such problems were reported in Achham, Kailali and Kapilvastu districts.
Furthermore, the report revealed that the right to privacy of the infected ones was not protected in many cases and the infected have faced social stigma and discrimination.
Likewise, a schoolteacher in Gorkha district had to lose job as his/her privacy was not protected.
According to the study, returnee migrant workers from India and their families, sex workers, their partners and drug users are at high risk of HIV.
