The government has taken initiatives to resolve problems facing people due to loan sharks. The situation has been so intense that the people who have become victims of loan-sharking have taken to the streets seeking the government’s intervention and support.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ through the Home secretary assured the agitating people, who have set out on a journey to Kathmandu, the federal capital, all the way from Bardibas in Mahottari district, seeking the government’s support, of resolving their problems, and asked them to return home, according to the PM’s press coordinator Surya Kiran Sharma.

Following the direction, Chief District Officer, Makawanpur, Rajendra Dev Pandey held a meeting with the agitating farmers, and assured that the government was at work to make related laws, and a case was filed against loan sharks.

He also pledged to provide necessary assistants to them to return home. On the occasion, the farmers said they had joined a campaign against loan-sharking, and would not return home until related laws were made.

They also urged the management of blankets and transportation for them to reach Kathmandu as part of their campaign against loan-sharking. They were provided with blankets, said CDO Pandey.

On resolving their problems, the Ministry of Home Affairs has forwarded the draft of the related law to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, said Sharma.

“Today, the Prime Minister directed the secretary of the Ministry of Law to present the related law to the meeting of the Council of Ministers scheduled to take place today as a proposal, and register it with the parliament. The law will be registered with the parliament soon. The Prime Minister is serious about resolving problems of the affected farmers,” he said. So far, the government has booked at least 350 people on the charge of practicing and promoting loan-sharking locally known as 'meter byaj'.
