The House of Representatives, Women and Social Affairs Committee has directed the concerned ministry to give importance to the gender responsive aspect in the policies, programs and budget of the Fiscal Year 2022/23 AD. After the discussion on "Promoting Gender in Government's Annual Policies and Programs and Budget" in today's meeting of the Committee, Chairperson Nirudevi Pal said that gender responsive budget is a broadly equitable distribution of public finance for all genders in the management of public expenditure management.
The Committee has directed the National Commission for Women, Children and Senior Citizens to coordinate with the National Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration for the gender responsive budget. The committee also directed the Ministry of Women, Industry and Finance to encourage the use of materials such as silicone cups, the best alternative to pads used by women during menstruation, and to adopt such policies and programs. Chairman Pal informed that the committee has directed to reconsider the existing tariffs while importing pads and silicone cups.
The Committee directs to effectively implement the budget allocated for women's development by effectively reaching the target group, prioritize the existing programs in Nepali society to reduce violence against women and ensure the rights of gender and sexual minorities and effective implementation of maternal and child reduction programs. Dr. Bishwanath Poudel, Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, said that the aim of the commission was to distribute the pads used during menstruation free of cost and to construct public toilets in the city. Chairperson of the Women's Commission Kamala Parajuli stressed on the need to bring a women, children and senior citizen friendly budget for sustainable development. MPs Narayan Khatiwada, Durga BK, Vimala BK and Thammaya Thapa stressed on the need to give priority to women's issues in the budget.
