The Tikapur Municipality of Kailali is preparing for the onslaught of flood. The municipality has prepared a detailed action plan related to forecast-based pre-work and disaster-responsive social security to minimize the possible floods and their impact during the monsoon period. A meeting of the Disaster Management Committee held in the municipality for pre-preparation has decided to practice artificial flooding on June 13, 14 and 15 this year.
The municipality has urged all the concerned organizations and mechanisms to be in a state of readiness to avoid the risk of floods. All the thematic branches of the municipality have been mobilized to assist and coordinate for the artificial event practice to be conducted on June 13, 14 and 15 with the technical assistance of Nepal Red Cross Society to carry out pre-work based on forecast to keep the community around the Karnali River inundated due to the rains.
The playground of Tribhuvan Secondary School, Watanpur in Ward No. 8 has been selected to build a center for safe relocation of the community, said Nirmala Chaudhary, Chief of Municipal Forest Environment and Disaster Sub-Branch.
Mayor Khadka Bahadur Shah said that during the onset of monsoon and the first impact would fall on the people of Tikapur. "There was information last year that the farmers were upset due to negligence," he said. Besides alerting the citizens, the municipality should also be in a state of readiness.
