UML National Congress: leaders intensify discussion for consensus

Top leaders of the CPN UML now are on internal discussion and consultations in forging consensus for unanimously electing the leadership of the party in its 10th National Congress underway in Sauraha, Chitwan.

In the closed-door session of the party, the delegates have demanded unanimously-elected leadership. They are chanting slogans calling for the unified and unanimous leadership in the party. The closed-door session of the national congress comprising a total of 2,275 delegates, including nominated will elect a new leadership of the CPN UML.

A central committee meeting of the party last night decided to expand the 225-member central committee to 301-member in order to seek consensus.

Talking to media persons, UML’s Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai said efforts are underway to forge consensus for the internal management of the party. The 10-point agreement inked for the party unity is available among the delegates of the national congress.

On a question of whether the consensus would suppress delegates’ right to vote, party central member Surya Thapa said a new leadership would be chosen striking balance between the experienced and emerging leaders.

The closed-door session that was set for 10.00 am this morning is said to kick start after 12.00 noon today. According to the program schedule, foreign guests would deliver their best wishes remarks in the session.

The party’s central election commission has intensified its preparation to hold the election if consensus is not likely to materialize.
