It has snowed for the first time this year in the Himalayan district of Solukhumbu. In the past years, Solukhumbu used to experience snow from the end of December and the first week of January, but this year, it has snowed late. Rain and snow started in other parts of the country from the previous week, but in the district, there was snow with rain only on Sunday.
Since Sunday morning, the weather has changed and it has been snowing with light rain since evening. At present, there is light snowfall in the area above 3000 meters altitude of the district. Farmers and locals have felt relief after partial rains in the lower areas of the district and snowfall in the upper areas. The mountains, which were snowless, have become covered with snow.
It is snowing in Pattale, Pike, Namche, Khumjung, and other places in the district. Since there is no snow throughout the winter season, the cold has started to be felt in the Himalayan settlements, where summer has already started. However, local resident Prakash Magar said that there was not as much snow as in previous years.
In the Namche market area, it snowed only for a few minutes in the morning. Although the snow is less in the market area, it is snowing in the mountains. Bhumiraj Upadhyay, chief conservation officer of Everest National Park, said that the mountains have indeed turned white. According to him, since the snow is not thick, the snow has not frozen on the ground.
The farmers, who were worried about the lack of irrigation due to the lack of rain and snow in winter, have felt relief. According to Deepak Basnet, a farmer of Necha Salyan rural municipality, those who were worried about the decrease in the production of winter crops became excited about the rain.
