63 percent industries closed due to coronavirus

Most of the industries have been badly affected by the global crisis posed by coronavirus. Of the total industries which were closed for four months due to COVID-19, 63 percent stopped operation since then in the country.

Similarly, 24 percent remained partially operative and 13 resumed full operation.

Information to this was shared at a programme organized to make public the province level result of the international industrial survey. The event was organized jointly by the National Statistics Office and Statistics Office, Chitwan here Thursday.

Due to the dent in industries, 17 percent of labourers had to quit their jobs without any incentive. Similarly, 60 percent of them were forced to leave the job temporarily.

The wage was curtailed partially to 11 percent of workers, while 12 percent got the wage delaying the regular time, according to Director at National Statics Office, Rajesh Dhital.

Currently, there are 60,185 industries in operation. Among them, 56,611 are related to industrial production while 2,224 are related to water supply, drainage, waste management and treatment, and 994 are related to electricity, gas, steam and environment-friendly service, among others.

Among the operational industries in Nepal, 5,017 are big industries and 51,094 small ones. The industries are categorized based on human resources, Dhital added.

As many as 381,687 persons have got direct employment in the industries, as per the survey report.

Moreover, 40 percent products of Nepali industries have been fully utilized.

The survey further revealed that small productive industries did not have faced problems with loans.

The programme was addressed by Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel, Joint Secretary at National Statistics Office, Dilliraj Joshi, and district level industrialists.
