Conservation of source on top priority for safeguarding groundwater

In view of deepening drinking water crisis due to climate change impacts and other reasons, the three layers of government have agreed to work together for regulation of water use, conservation of water source and the recharge system.

A meeting of the coordination and sanitation thematic committee convened by the Ministry of Drinking Water in Kathmandu on Sunday took such decision for collaboration between the federal, province and local governments.

The drinking water ministers from all seven provinces, secretaries and division chiefs were present at the meeting. The meeting also decided to collect the data of the unfinished drinking water projects to ensure the drinking water supply across the country including Madhesh and Karnali provinces.

For the data collection, all the provinces have pledged to extend their support and to bring those projects into operation at the earliest possible time.

Likewise, monitoring job would be beefed up to avoid duplication in the projects while coordination mechanism of the project section chiefs among all the thematic ministries' would be formed and information shared in every three months.

Addressing the meeting, Drinking Water Minister Mahindra Raya Yadav pledged to work by forging collaboration and coordination among the ministries and government agencies to address the problems of drying up water sources in the hilly areas and receding water level in Tarai areas.

Minister Yadav argued that dams should be constructed in the Chure region to troubleshoot the drinking water crisis in Tarai belt.
