The election for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives is being held today. For this, a meeting of the House of Representatives has been called at 11 am at the Federal Parliament Building in New Baneshwor.
UML's Devraj Ghimire and Congress's Ishwori Neupane are competing for the Speaker's position.
In today's meeting, there is an agenda for the proposer to propose and the supporter to be elected as Speaker. After that, the notification of candidacy will be discussed collectively and presented for decision according to the order of registration and voting will be held, according to the Federal Parliament Secretariat.
There is a constitutional provision that the Speaker shall be elected from among the members of the House of Representatives within 15 days of the first meeting of the Federal Parliament. There is a provision that one of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker should be a woman and from a different party.
UML's Subas Nemwang is among the proponents of UML's Devraj Ghimire, the Speaker's candidate. Among the supporters, is Hitraj Pandey of Maoist Center, Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, and Rajendra Lingden, President of the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party.
Another candidate is Ishwari Neupane of Congress, the proposer is Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma and the supporter is Prakash Jwala of the United Socialist Party and Congress Ramesh Lekhak.
