Nomination papers are being filed today for the election of the new Vice President of the country to be held on coming March 17.

Filing of nominations will take place at the Lhotse Hall of the Parliament Building in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm today, said Assistant Election Officer Amrita Kumari Sharma.

Just like the President, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of the members of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives and the National Assembly) and the Provincial Assembly.

The total number of voters is 882 including 332 federal parliament members and 550 provincial assembly members. The vote weightage of the federal MP is 79 and that of the provincial assembly member is 48.

As per the constitution, the president and vice president should represent different gender or ethnic group. With senior Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel elected as the President representing the Khas Arya group, the vice president should now be a person of a different gender or ethnic group.
