The political parties, civil society and locals of Taplejung have urged the government not to rename the Suketar Airport after late Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari. While unveiling the budget for fiscal year 2078/79 on Saturday the government had announced that Suketar Airport would be renamed Rabindra Adhikari Airport and Chuhandanda Airport of Aathrai Rural Municipality in Tehrathum district would be renamed Ang Tshiring Sherpa Airport.
Both Sherpa and Adhikari lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Pathibhara, Taplejung district, on March 9, 2019.
They have urged the government not to rename the Suketar Airport through social media.
Meanwhile, Yogesh Bhattarai, lawmaker of the now-dissolved House of Representatives and member of CPN UML, mentioned on social media that before renaming any site of historical importance there has to be a meaningful debate among local stakeholders, politicians and also the locals regarding the necessity, relevancy, appropriateness and the aftermath of renaming any site. He added that only then will participative democracy be strengthened.
Bhattarai, who is also former Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, further stressed that even if any work is being done with good intention it has to be properly discussed with the concerned people or else there will always be opposition to that work.
