KATHMANDU: In the span of a year, natural disasters across Nepal claimed the lives of 745 people, as per data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The Authority recorded 8,861 disaster events nationwide over the year, leading to widespread human and financial losses. According to NDRRMA spokesperson Ram Bahadur KC, 69 people were reported missing and 1,702 sustained injuries in various disaster-related incidents. Altogether, 18,991 households were affected, and the estimated economic loss reached Rs 3.13 billion.
Landslides were the deadliest, responsible for 351 deaths. Floods followed, killing 97 people, while 78 died due to lightning strikes and 77 lost their lives in fire-related incidents. Animal attacks resulted in 43 fatalities, 24 people drowned, 23 died in air crashes, and 19 succumbed to snake bites.
Other causes included heavy rainfall (8 deaths), additional fire-related incidents (10 deaths), storms (7 deaths), boat capsizing (1 death), and seven fatalities from other causes. Avalanches accounted for 48 deaths and 18 were flood-related. Three individuals remain missing due to avalanche incidents.
While landslides caused the highest number of deaths, fires were the most frequently reported disaster. Between April 1 and April 29, 2025, there were 4,145 fire incidents. This was followed by 1,195 animal attacks and 1,105 landslides.
Other recorded events included 568 cases of heavy rain, 418 each of floods and lightning, 111 drownings, 84 snake bite cases, 349 windstorms, two air crashes, one boat capsize, six avalanches, 74 earthquakes, one hailstorm, and seven other disaster events.
