The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to update the records of every dead body found in an unidentified condition.

In a press release issued by NHRC spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel today, the constitutional human rights watchdog body has instructed the government to update the records of each unidentified dead body and make arrangements to identify the bodies and hand them over to their relatives.

"Respecting the right of every citizen and their families to perform final rites as per their identity, religion, culture, and tradition, we again remind the government to keep updated the data of every dead body found in unidentified condition, make arrangement to establish the identity of the deceased and hand them to their relatives and implement the past recommendations of the commission", he added.

The human rights commission has also monitored the sit-in staged by human rights activists, Dr Sugam KC, Sunil Maharjan, and Rohit Shrestha in Maitighar Mandala for the past 10 days putting forth a charter of demand that the details of the unidentified dead bodies have to be collected and disclosed as well as its records to be updated as per the international practice.

Among the demands of the hunger strikers include implementation of past recommendations of NHRC to the government, disclosure of photographs showing the clear face of the unidentified dead body with brief details, and ensuring the right to establish the identity of the unknown dead bodies and disappeared people by opening a separate website as practiced in other countries.

The government has been reminded of the NHRC's earlier recommendation to frame and implement the law regarding dead bodies in line with international standards, the press release added.
