With the dipping temperature and completion of the elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) and Province Assembly, people from Manang district in the mountainous region have left for the downhill to escape the freezing cold.

Seasonal migration to the downhill from the district is a normal practice for the people there.

Chief District Officer of Manang, Rabindra Prasad Acharya, said the locals from Manang had gone to Kathmandu, Pokhara and other places with the onset of the cold. “People from Manang travel to other districts to escape chilly winter. This time, they migrated to downhill bit late due to elections,” CDO Acharya informed.

Generally, people from this district start migrating from early November but this year, they migrated after the elections. “Time has come for snowfall. The water freezes. This is their compulsion to migrate to other districts,” Acharya added.

The local residents make their journey downhill for almost four months to do away with cold. “They are forced to migrate as they have difficulties to transport foodstuffs and also the water gets frozen.”

He, however, said that mobility of tourists is ongoing though sparse from this week.

Some tourism entrepreneurs remain here until the tourists continue visiting the Manang district.
