KATHMANDU: While there is no official confirmation that Durga Prasai fled to India via the Kakadbhitta border in Jhapa, police suspect he did.

Authorities have traced the vehicle that transported him from Tinkune, Kathmandu, to Jhapa.

The Scorpio SUV, registered under Bagmati Province with the number Ba B 4208, is now in police custody.

Prasai reportedly hid inside a shuttered building after allegedly inciting violence during a rally in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28. As chaos erupted, police responded with tear gas and warning shots.

That same day, pro-monarchy supporters under Prasai’s leadership were seen hurling stones at private residences. Amid the turmoil, Prasai, shielded by private security and supporters, fled the scene in a vehicle with religious leader Pushkar Khatiwada.

A senior police official confirmed that Prasai, along with five others, traveled from Kathmandu to the Kakadbhitta border using the BP Highway.

The vehicle and its driver were later found in Jhapa and have since been transported to Kathmandu by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.

Authorities believe Prasai is now in India with several associates. After arriving in Kakadbhitta, he switched vehicles before crossing the border.

Prior to his escape, Prasai made a brief stop at Pushkar Khatiwada’s residence in Imadol, where he had fruits and tea, made a final call to RPP leader Dhawal Shumsher, and then turned off his mobile phone.
