Promote adoption and ownership of mother language

Stating that the Maithili language is facing a crisis, speakers of a program have emphasized the need to promote the adoption and ownership of the language.

At an interaction on 'Education in Mother Tongue' organized by the Maithili Development Fund here on Tuesday on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, 2023, Speaker of Madhes Provincial Assembly Ramchandra Mandal said that if Maithili speakers do not develop ownership over their language then it will face a crisis.

Maithili language may face the same fate as the Sanskrit language if it cannot become the language of people of all castes. Sharing that 12 members of the provincial assembly took the oath of office in the Maithili language, he urged those members to submit a plan for the development of the Maithili language.

Linguist Dr. Ramavatar Yadav shared about how the day is being celebrated as Mother Language Day, when five people were martyred in the language movement at Dhaka University in Bangladesh on February 21, 1952.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad Bimal, President of Madhes Pragya Foundation, Ram Bharosh Kapadi Bhramar, campaigners Roshan Janakpuri, Parameshwar Kapadi, leaders Ramsaroj Yadav, Parameshwar Sah, Briseshchandra Lal said that even though the Maithili language is not supported by the government it is the society that keeps it alive and the political parties and the government needs to be made aware of it.

Artist and writer Ramesh Ranjan Jha shared that the Maithili language has dropped to the seventh most spoken language in the census of 2078.

Chairman of the Fund, Jeevanath Chaudhary, said that like during the Panchayat rule, only the development of roads and canals is getting priority in the federal system, hence identity, language, and culture are facing a crisis.
