The Central Committee meeting of CPN UML, which has been scheduled for today is likely to take action against members who voted for Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The Central Committee meeting of CPN UML will be held today. The meeting has been scheduled for 3 pm at Tulsi Lal Memorial Foundation in Chyasal. The party is making preparations to take action against 22 lawmakers including senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, who voted in favour of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also president of Nepali Congress, during the vore of confidence at the House of Representatives (HoR).

Central Committee member Mahesh Basnet said that the concerned lawmakers have been given till 2 pm to furnish their clarifications. If they are not able to do so then the Central Committee will initiate action against the lawmakers, he added.

However, Sher Bahadur Tamanag, Secretary of the party’s central office and who is also a Central Committee member, mentioned that the letters seeking clarifications had not been delivered to all the 22 lawmakers. Hence, the meeting will focus on the party’s activities and the upcoming general convention, he said.

Meanwhile, lawmakers of the Nepal faction have said that they will not give any clarification as that will go against the verdict of the Supreme Court. While issuing its verdict to reinstate the HoR and appoint Deuba as the prime minister, the court had stated that as per Article 76 (5) of the constitution when a prime minister is being elected no party can issue a whip to its parliamentarians.

The court had also said action cannot be taken against any member of any party for not obeying the party whip as per the abovementioned article.
