KOLKATA: Farmers in India are increasingly turning to Raja jute, a new high-yield variety that offers an additional profit of 10,000 taka per acre, thanks to its longer fibers and superior quality.

Developed by Nuziveedu Seeds, Raja jute (NJ-7005) was introduced in 2020 by Dr. Mohammad Mashiur Rahman, Chief Scientist at the company’s research department. The variety is at least two feet longer than traditional jute, with thicker bark and stronger fibers, leading to higher yields and better market prices.

To promote Raja jute, Nuziveedu Seeds has launched a “Celebrity Mega Field Day” program across key jute-producing districts, including Nadia, Murshidabad, Malda, and North 24 Parganas. At an event in Baliura village, Nadia, renowned artist Dipayan Banerjee performed a song celebrating Raja jute’s success and benefits.

Farmers in these regions have reported at least two additional quintals of jute per acre with this variety, leading to higher earnings and improved livelihoods. Many now plan to expand Raja jute cultivation in the coming seasons.

To prevent counterfeit seeds, the company advises farmers to check for the blue government certification sticker on seed packets.

In Malda’s Kalitala, Bhutni, and Manikchak, popular folk singer Uttam Baul also performed on March 22, further encouraging farmers to adopt Raja jute. His performance resonated with audiences, inspiring even those who had not previously considered planting the new variety.

With higher profits, better fiber quality, and growing interest among farmers, Raja jute is set to redefine India’s jute industry.
